Our journey began in the bustling streets of Kensington, where our founder first learned his craft as a home cook, cooking for Arab families who would become his first, most loyal guests. It was there, plate by plate, that he discovered his gift for turning simple ingredients into something people would remember.

From there, his path led him north to Scotland, where he made his way working on the famous Castle Street — sharpening his craft further before that gift became a promise: to build a better life for his family. Nearly three decades ago, he brought that promise to Alness and opened The Balti Cottage, named for the humble cooking pot at the heart of it all. The balti isn't just how we cook; it's what we stand for. Rich, aromatic, full of spice and character, much like the man who started it.

What began as one man's dream has become a family's life's work. Every one of his children has grown up in this kitchen, learning the same values he did all those years ago — family, respect, and love, cooked into every dish. Together, they've kept those values at the centre of everything, through good years and hard ones, through a high street that's changed more times than we can count.

Today, we're proud to be one of the oldest businesses on Alness High Street, not because we set out to be, but because our neighbours and customers have trusted us, meal after meal, year after year. Our founder has seen it all: the ups, the downs, the changing faces of this town. And through it all, one thing hasn't changed — his commitment to making his family proud, and to sharing something warm and memorable with everyone who walks through our door.

When our founder began this journey, he built a menu that stood alone — a mix of cuisines and choice that Alness simply didn't have at the time. Quality, flavour, and value for every customer, that was the goal from day one.

But no high street stands still. Over the years, Alness has changed shape around us. New faces opening their doors, new flavours arriving in town, from pizza and kebabs to Chinese cuisine, each carving out their own space. The competition was no longer just about who did curry best, it was about who could keep up. And for The Balti Cottage, that meant one thing: evolve, or be left behind.
